The writer is an English literature graduate from the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
He has been running competitively for the past 10 years and counting, since he was 14 years old in 2002.
His journey in competitive running started when in Secondary Two, his physical education teacher, who was himself a running enthusiast, decided to form a team to compete in that year’s National Inter-School Cross Country Championships.
During a PE lesson, the teacher asked for students who were interested or who did well the previous year in the school’s cross country race.
Having finished in the top-five in the previous year’s race as a Secondary One student (against peers and other students who were a year older in Secondary Two), the writer raised his hand.
In that year’s National Inter-School Cross Country Championships, he ran the 4.8km route at MacRitchie Reservoir for the first time in his life. He did not qualify for the final but, for some reason he still cannot pinpoint, he liked the experience.
Later in the year, in July, was the National Inter-School Track and Field Championships. It was here where he, for the first time in his life, realised he could be amongst the best in the country at something. He qualified for the finals of both the 800m and the 1500m in the ‘C’ Division boys’ category to be amongst the top-16 boys in his age-group in those events in the country.
In junior college, he was part of the team who won the ‘A’ Division boys’ cross country team gold in 2006. He also won a bronze medal in the ‘A’ Division boys’ 800m race in 2006.
At university level, he has medalled at the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) level in the 800m, 1500m, 3000m steeplechase, 5000m, and 4x400m relay events.
In 2011, he represented Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) at the ASEAN Army International Run in Malaysia. He was also one of two runners selected by adidas Singapore to compete at the adidas King of the Road Southeast Asian regional race in the Philippines. In 2012, he ranked as the fourth Singaporean at the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore and represented the Singapore Combined Universities team at the ASEAN University Games (AUG) in the 3000m steeplechase and 10,000m events in Vientiane, Laos. In March 2013, the Singapore Athletic Association selected him to represent Singapore at the New Taipei City Marathon. In September 2014, the Singapore Athletic Association selected him to represent Singapore at the Incheon Songdo Half Marathon.
